Current Music:Dry Kill Logic – The Strength I Call My Own
Subject:Interesting ending.
Time:10:08 pm
Current Mood:[mood icon] awake
I think I'm going to have to declare the whole "Interesting Things" project defunct. Not because I found a job, but because I'm just not following through on it right now. Perhaps I'll Do a Version Two/II/2.0/Dos/Redux sometime, but for now I've got to throw in the cards. Not on photography, far from it, but the "take one a day" goal I was working towards was something I was not accomplishing. Lately, my heads been so full of shit it's dribbling out of my ears. I think this project has been one of a few casualties resulting from that issue, along with my social life and my ability to get off my goddamn posterior.

I'm really glad I started it though. I've learned so much about my camera, about so many of the basics and a few of the tricks. I've also learned there's so much more for me to try and begin to grasp at. I HAVE NOT learned any post, and thank God for that. Shooting so much without going "Oh I'll fix it in photoshop" forced me to be better.

I've got a few other ideas floating around in my head, one I may start as soon as tonight, but I figured I'd cut this one off before I became to embittered about not riding it through until the original goal.

I occasionally follow a couple different Dutch sites, mostly funny/shock videos and webtoys, almost collegehumor.com but being Euro the "line" is quite a bit further out. Anyhow one of them recently put up a photo essay on the effects of the growing prevalence of drugs (particularly heroin) in the Ukraine.

I've known about the fact that ever since the Afghan conflict began Europe's been hit with a tidal wave of heroin, since apparently the Taliban and NATO forces are too busy shooting at each other to effectively deal with the growers. But this really hammers things into your head. Don't look if you're having a good day, it'll ruin your buzz. Don't look if you're having a bad day, you'll just get horribly depressed.

It's way too honest.

Not safe for work.

[edit] I should mention the end of the series ends on a hopeful note, but getting there is pretty rough.

I was thinking back to an article I read about combining load bearing exoskeletons with power-generating weight carriers, so that a user's movement would power or at least partially recharge the batteries.

I think we need to carry it a step further. Take the Lockheed Martin exoskeleton and add the power generator as mentioned before, but don't stop there.

I think you need to add the power arms I posted on FB. Wrap the whole thing in armor, taking the time to utilize some of the new cloaking tech, if only to kill the heat and IR signatures since practical active camo is a ways off.

Go old school with the weapons, a nice Ma Deuce fifty cal. for simplicity and reliability. Add a demo saw on the other arm for shock's sake and breaching capability.

But wait, there's more! Give these two kids DARPA grants to add point defense and terrifying ohmygoditshootsfire capabilities:

For a final touch, lock [info]cantdrawcanswim in a room for a week, feeding him a steady diet of horror movies and psychotropic drugs, then tell him he can only come out when he designs the scariest motherfucking mask to put on the helmet.

Then we will be ready when the aliens invade.

Man I love that lamp. I'm so glad the efforts to dispose of it by multiple individuals in my life (who's opinion normally I take under heavy consideration) went fruitless.

If you'll excuse me, I'm going to go run around the apartment wearing a respirator and combat boots while brandishing a nerf gun and some cheap whiskey, pausing only to watch Mad Max (DVR'd off of IFC, thanks Time Warner!) on permanent loop.

If the games half as awesome as it looks the shenanigans will be a good warm up, if not they will be useful to prove my unstable state of mind when I horrifically beat the developers at 2K for letting me down so hard.

Subject:The impending loss of (my) life:
Time:04:19 am
...or what facade of a life I'm rocking these days. Anyway take a look at this schedule:

Borderlands: effin tommorow!

Forza Motorsport 3: in a week!

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: November 10

Assassin's Creed II & Left 4 Dead 2: Happy Birthday to me! Oh thank you Ubisoft, thank you Valve, you shouldn't have.

The Saboteur: December 8

Mass Effect 2: January 26

And even after that I won't catch a break, what with Bioshock 2 and a videogame (very) loosely based off of Dante's Inferno (cunningly called Dante's Inferno...may be shark jumping ahead) coming along. It's going to be bad.

How the fuck am I going to find a job with these kinds of distractions?

Back from the Dead. Or the Swine Flu. Maybe SARS, or a particularly vicious cold. Went for a walk last night to work the kinks out. Needed to take some pictures again since it's been far too damn long. No high art here, just chronicling the jaunt and trying to shake loose the lethargy that's been keeping me from doing anything (except the darts pic, that was almost a couple weeks ago).

Subject:Picture Fail
Time:09:59 pm
Today's picture I was trying to take was a extremely low-light time-lapse shot of glow-in-the-dark nerf gun rounds being blasted towards the camera. I was expecting some cool tracer shot effects. I thought it would look good. I even had some U-238 jokes queued up for the caption.

It came out terribly, a small green glow against a pitch black background. Cranking the ISO only yielded a noisy and indistinct picture of a room with a small green glow in one corner. There may have been some noxiously colored streaking across the higher ISO picture, but it did not approach what was supposed to have been attained at all. In fact it looked about as good as hammered shit.

Ah well. Might be more viable with actual film. Have to give it a try some other day.

The Conservative Bible Project:

Not a joke. It's not a joke. Dear God I wish it was.

These rabid and frothing redstaters have gotten so worked up over Obama they are looking for liberal pinko hippie influence everywhere. Just like la Terreur in revolutionary France, it was only a matter of time before their crazed eyes turned on themselves.

An example of what they feel needs "fixing":

"Socialistic terminology permeates English translations of the Bible, without justification. This improperly encourages the "social justice" movement among Christians.

For example, the conservative word "volunteer" is mentioned only once in the ESV, yet the socialistic word "comrade" is used three times, "laborer(s)" is used 13 times, "labored" 15 times, and "fellow" (as in "fellow worker") is used 55 times."

Now, to quote directly from the Conservapedia article regarding The Bible: "Evangelical Protestantism belives strongly in the divine inspiration and inerrancy of the whole Bible and has been the most receptive of Biblical Authority." And yet these incompetents feel the need to make some sweeping changes because they're afraid of some liberal plot to go back in time and tamper with early transcripts of the sermon on the mount? Isn't that more or less antithetical to their own belief structure? (I must confess to wanting to wrap up this paragraph with a pithy link back to conservapedia's article on heresy, but I found said article sorely lacking)

I consider myself to be pretty solidly in the center of the whole political nightmare, but these concussed fools are so far to the right they make me look like Lenin.

Self explanatory information, but kinda neat. Understated and simple site design.

It'd be nice to see this site carry on forward long enough for triple or quadruple digits to get on there.

It'd be nice if I'm alive for that.

I'm finding it harder to actually keep up with my self-imposed deadline for one decent picture per day, so I'm going back to the original request for ideas for inspiration.

Going down the list I've got to do [info]sjcarpediem's first subject, Happiness.

Now I'm no Buddhist, hippie, or new-age wannabe guru, but I do think the concept of happiness as being an internal thing is a good one. I don't think you want me to shove a camera up my ass. But I also know that you can find joy in outside stimulus. That's why I love that Discovery Channel commercial I linked to way back, or the XKCD comic it inspired (and Drew's sweet icon). But trying to convey the awesomeness and the joy that you can experience in EVERYTHING is a life's work, one that could never be completed (not that this should stop one from trying).

So I kept it small and simple. Here's something that inspires happiness, at least for me.

[info]knyteowl has been getting involved pretty deeply in the whole Civil War re-enactors scene, and suggested I come along and see what it's about. Seemed intriguing, and turned out to be good fun. Not sure if it's something I'd like to do on a regular basis but definitely an experience worth going through.

The second day I didn't run about in blues, so I got to act as an embedded photojournalist with the New York 157th Volunteers. I bet you thought that was a 20th/21st century thing, huh?

Sept 26-27 Re-enactment

There's nearly fifty in the set, but I'd appreciate any time you can take for a look-see or some constructive criticism. It's not part of my "Interesting Things" timewaster project, so there's a bit more cohesion to the set. And yes, I tried to frame shots to keep things a little more "in-period", but some stuff was unavoidable, you don't need to point out what I already see.
